A lithograph of woodcock shooting, issued by Currier & Ives in New York around 1870, puts a small, long-billed game bird that favors damp woodland and thickets at the center of a sporting scene. The firm sold a large number of prints like this one, aimed at a middle-class public that followed hunting, fishing and country life, even though many of its buyers never carried a gun. Catalogued in the 1983 Currier & Ives raisonné as number 7323, the print shows how field sport was pictured in the years after the Civil War.
