Few images show a colonial town only a year after its founding, which is what sets this engraving apart. It records Savannah, Georgia, as it looked on March 29, 1734, drawn from Peter Gordon's view and engraved in London by Pierre Fourdrinier about a year later. The settlement had been laid out in 1733 under James Oglethorpe, who brought the first colonists to the bluff above the Savannah River. Bird's-eye views like this one, made for British readers, let people far from the Atlantic see the street plan, the early buildings and the river waterfront of a new English colony.
