Benjamin Franklin's reception by Louis XVI at Versailles on March 20, 1778, is the scene this chromolithograph depicts, and the record places it in the moment of his first formal audience with the French king. Franklin had come to France as America's representative during the Revolutionary War, and the alliance he helped secure in 1778 gave the new United States crucial military and financial support. The print was made around 1903, long after the event, so it reflects how later generations chose to remember Franklin's diplomacy as a moment of national pride.
