The engraving shows a game of jeu de paume, the court tennis played in France long before the modern lawn game took its name. Its caption card places the scene in the reign of Louis XIII (1610 to 1643), and the subject was later used as the frontispiece for Jean-Adrien Jusserand's study of sports and games. The game was played with the bare hand or a racket in enclosed courts, and it was a favorite pastime of the French court, so the print offers a useful glimpse of aristocratic leisure in the early seventeenth century.
