The sitters are recorded only as "Louis and Lola," and the question mark in the title shows that cataloguers were unsure of the names. The photograph dates to April 22, 1912, and was made by Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news and feature pictures to newspapers and magazines. Its negatives, now the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, document the public life of the 1910s, from stage performers and politicians to street scenes. Pictures like this one show how the agency turned ordinary subjects into widely reproduced images.
