Few stage names of the 1840s carried as much notoriety as Lola Montes, the "Countess of Landsfeld," a title King Ludwig I of Bavaria gave her in 1847. Born Eliza Gilbert in Ireland, the dancer's influence over the king stirred public anger in Munich and helped fuel the unrest of 1848, which forced her to leave Bavaria. Her American tour in the early 1850s made her a sensation, and this tinted lithograph, made by the New York firm Sarony & Major at 117 Fulton Street and issued by the publisher Atwill, reflects that fame. The date is not recorded on the piece and is estimated from other sheet music of the period.
