Few early American aviators are as closely tied to the Lafayette Escadrille as Raoul Lufbery, the French-born pilot shown in this portrait. Lufbery had spent years in the United States before the First World War and joined the French air service, where he became one of the most successful Allied fighter pilots of the conflict. He later helped train and lead American pilots in the 94th Aero Squadron, and he was killed in combat over France in May 1918. The caption card gives no date for the photograph, so the image is best read as a portrait of a man who became a symbol of American volunteer aviation in World War I.
