Its slogan, "Ammunition!" and "bonds buy bullets," ties the poster to the 1918 war-finance drives, when the federal government sold Liberty Bonds to help pay for the war. Printed in Philadelphia by Ketterlinus, a firm known for wartime posters, and issued for the Third Federal Reserve District, which covered that city, it linked a buyer's purchase to the ammunition and machine guns used at the front. Credited to artist Vincent Lynel, the lithograph reflects the appeals that asked ordinary Americans at home to take part in the war effort.
