Remember Belgium" asks Americans to buy bonds by recalling a foreign country's suffering, which makes this 1918 poster unusual among war appeals. It was issued for the Fourth Liberty Loan, the autumn 1918 drive to finance the American war effort. German forces overran Belgium in August 1914, and reports of civilian killings, hostage taking and the burning of the library at Louvain spread widely in the United States and hardened public opinion. The poster's subjects, which include Belgian children and German military conduct, turn that memory into a direct argument for lending money to the war.
