Few posters from the First World War pushed the Liberty Loan drives as bluntly as this one, which ties the purchase of a bond directly to the fate of American troops in the field. Its slogan, "Back up our boys with your Liberty Bond," reflects the Treasury's campaign to finance the war through public loans, and the 1917 date places it in the first of those drives, when the United States had just entered the conflict. The poster was issued with a United Cigars notice, a reminder that private companies often printed and distributed such material as a form of patriotic support. Its soldiers with fixed bayonets and rifles show the bond framed as a kind of ammunition for the men at the front.
