Under a headline that sets the dead of 1776 against the reader's choice in 1917, this lithograph turns the Revolution into a direct appeal to buy war bonds. Its Minuteman, the colonial militiaman who answered the call at Lexington and Concord, stands in for the civic duty the poster asks of its viewers. Printed in color by the Ohio Litho. Co. of Toledo, the sheet belongs to the Liberty Loan campaigns the Treasury ran after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917. The government needed large sums from ordinary citizens to finance the war, and posters like this one carried that request into shops, post offices and public spaces.
