Over the top" was trench slang for the moment soldiers climbed out of their trenches to attack, and this 1918 lithograph uses the phrase to connect the fighting in France with the home front, where civilians were asked to finance the war. Ketterlinus printed the poster in Philadelphia for the Third Liberty Loan drive of spring 1918, which urged Americans to buy government bonds. The designer named in its title, Sidney H. Riesenberg, produced commercial and war-era poster work. Its pairing of a soldier with the American flag shows how the government presented bond purchases as direct support for the men overseas.
