Lend as they fight" links the sacrifice of soldiers at the front to the savings of civilians at home, urging buyers to put their money behind the war effort. Issued in 1918 for the Third Federal Reserve District, which covered eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, it also carries the sponsorship of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation. The Liberty Loan drives were the federal government's main way of financing American participation in the First World War, and posters like this one, with bold color and direct wording, were central to those campaigns. Its listed subjects include soldiers and firearms, reflecting the battlefield imagery used to make the bond drives feel personal.
