Lend the way they fight" sets the work of civilians at home beside the work of soldiers overseas, asking readers to match the sacrifice of the men in the trenches with their own money. The poster belongs to the first Liberty Loan campaign of 1917, the government's effort to finance American entry into the war after Congress declared war in April of that year. Liberty Bonds were sold through banks, post offices and local drives, and posters like this one carried the appeal into streets, storefronts and schools. Notice how the message turns a financial purchase into a patriotic duty.
