Set in plain lettering with no illustration, this lithograph pairs the slogan "Lend as they fight, save for the fourth Liberty Loan" with an appeal that puts the soldiers overseas beside the households at home. The Liberty Loans were the bonds the federal government sold to the public to help pay for American participation in the First World War, and the fourth drive, the last of the four, ran in the autumn of 1918. Posters like this asked ordinary citizens to see thrift as a form of service, with the money they saved and lent doing its part for the troops. Its reliance on words alone, with no portrait or battle scene, makes the message blunt and direct.
