Here the beaver, long a Canadian emblem of industry, stands in for the country's workforce, and the slogan urges every Canadian to keep busy by buying 1918 Victory Bonds. During the First World War, Canada raised money through a series of Victory Loan campaigns, borrowing from its own citizens to pay for the war and the factories, farms and shipyards that supported it. Posters like this one, printed as color lithographs, carried those appeals into streets, offices and shop windows across the country. Notice how the animal's busy, purposeful pose turns a request for money into a call to work.
