Boots and blood, the two subjects this poster is catalogued under, set its message apart from the many Liberty Bond posters of 1917 that relied on portraits or patriotic symbols. The title, "Keep these off the U.S.A.," frames the bond purchase as a way to keep the war away from American soil. The United States had entered the war in April 1917, and the Treasury ran a series of Liberty Loan drives to finance the military effort, with posters like this one carried into shop windows, post offices and public squares. John Norton's color lithograph is a useful example of how wartime advertising tried to turn a financial appeal into a matter of personal alarm.
