A portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish explorer who in 1513 crossed the Isthmus of Panama and became the first European to glimpse the Pacific from the Americas. Engraved in 1791, it appeared as an illustration in a Spanish collection of portraits of notable countrymen, a series that honored explorers and soldiers alongside statesmen and writers. Balboa's career ended in tragedy when he was executed for treason in 1519 after a dispute with the governor Pedrarias Dávila. The print reflects how, nearly three centuries later, Spain was still celebrating its overseas explorers in print.
