Few figures in colonial North American history loom as large as Louis Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon, the Marquis de Montcalm, named in this record's title. He commanded French forces in Canada during the Seven Years' War, and his defeat on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec City in 1759, where he was mortally wounded, helped hand New France to Britain. This 1897 photogravure is a later reproduction, likely made when interest in the French and Indian War was growing, so its portrait reflects a nineteenth-century view of the general rather than a firsthand record. The caption card that supplied these details is unverified, so the identification should be read with that in mind.
