Few sitters in Edward S. Curtis's work carry as much weight as Joseph, the Nez Perce leader, shown here in a feathered war bonnet and beaded necklaces. Joseph led his people during the 1877 flight from U.S. Army pursuit, and his surrender speech, with its line "I will fight no more forever," became one of the best-known statements in American Indian history. Curtis made the portrait around 1903, when Joseph was living on the Colville Reservation in Washington. It later appeared in volume 8 of *The North American Indian*, Curtis's multivolume survey of Native peoples.
