Copyrighted in Plano, Illinois, in July 1879, this albumen print is catalogued under the name of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Latter-day Saint movement who was killed in 1844. The date and the copyright holder suggest the sitter is more likely his son, Joseph Smith III, who led the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from Plano during those years. The portrait was made by W.B. Carson, a photographer in Peoria, Illinois. Albumen prints like this one were the standard way portraits circulated in the 1870s, shared as keepsakes among family, followers, and admirers.
