Joseph Gurney Cannon, a Republican congressman from Illinois, is shown here around 1912, when he was one of the most powerful and most resented men in Washington. He served as Speaker of the House from 1903 to 1911, and his tight control over committee assignments and floor procedure earned him the nickname "Uncle Joe." In 1910 a coalition of insurgent Republicans and Democrats stripped much of that power from the Speaker's office, a fight that reshaped how the House operated. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a news photographer whose pictures document the political figures of that era.
