Industrialist Andrew Carnegie is the focus of this April 1906 photograph, taken at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The school was founded in 1881 under Booker T. Washington to train Black students as teachers and in practical trades, and by 1906 it was among the best-known institutions of its kind in the country. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented the campus extensively, made the glass plate negative, and the image captures a moment when a leading philanthropist visited a school that had become a symbol of industrial education.
