At Hampton Institute in Virginia, students in this classroom scene are learning to paint carriages, a practical trade set apart from the school's academic work. Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, founded in 1868 to educate freedmen and, from 1878, Native American students, paired schooling with hands-on training in trades such as carpentry and carriage work, on the view that graduates should be able to earn a living. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who photographed the school's classrooms and workshops around 1899 and 1900, captured this vocational side of the curriculum at the turn of the century.
