Taken in Cavite, the province south of Manila, this 1899 view shows Filipino prisoners during the early months of the Philippine Insurrection. Fighting began in February of that year, after the Treaty of Paris transferred the islands from Spain to the United States and Filipino forces led by Emilio Aguinaldo turned against American troops. Cavite was a stronghold of the independence movement, and images like this one offer a rare visual record of a conflict many Americans knew mainly through newspaper accounts.
