Chain gangs were a common feature of Southern labor systems after Reconstruction, and this print documents one in Thomasville, Georgia, a railroad and timber town in the southwest part of the state. The men are shown in convict stripes, shackled together, with armed guards standing among them, a visual record of how forced labor was organized in the period. The title and date come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the photograph is best read as evidence of the practice in general terms. Prints like this one are valued by researchers because they show the working conditions and the authority structure of the system as its contemporaries saw it.
