Andersonville, the Confederate prison in southwest Georgia that the Union press called the "rebel prison-pen," is the setting of this wood engraving, made from a drawing by R. Sneden and published in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on October 21, 1865. The camp, formally Camp Sumter, opened in early 1864 and held tens of thousands of Union prisoners in an overcrowded stockade with little shelter, clean water, or food. About 13,000 of them died there before it closed in May 1865. The issue appeared only months after the war ended, when public anger over the conditions was at its height and the camp's commandant, Henry Wirz, was awaiting trial.
