The title, *Great expectations*, borrows the name of Charles Dickens's novel, published in 1861, and gives this c1897 print a wry, storytelling tone. The caption card credits John H. Tarbel of Asheville, North Carolina, with the copyright, a reminder that by the late 1890s small-city studios were producing their own scenes for a national market. The date and attribution come from that old card and have not been verified, so the picture is best read as an example of everyday American photography from its period.
