Libby Prison was a converted Richmond warehouse on Cary Street that the Confederate government used to hold captured Union officers during the Civil War. Its crowded upper floors and scarce food made it one of the most feared prisons of the conflict, and in February 1864 a large group of prisoners tunneled out, one of the war's most celebrated escapes. The shelflist card associates this print with the Baltimore firm Hoen & Co., a lithography house that produced many war-era views and popular images. The card also notes a copyright deposit date, though no year is recorded.
