The title places a baby in a dark tenement hallway in New York City, and the caption card dates the picture to about 1888 or 1889. Photographs like this belong to a wave of documentary work from those years, when reformers and newspaper writers used images of crowded tenements to press for better light, air, and sanitation in the city's poorest neighborhoods. Jacob Riis's 1890 book *How the Other Half Lives* drew on the same kind of imagery. Because the caption information is old and unverified, the photographer and circumstances remain uncertain, but the picture still shows how close family life and street life were in the city's densest blocks.
