Cigarmaking was one of the trades that moved from factories into city apartments in the 1880s, and this scene shows Bohemian workers doing it at home in a tenement. Bohemian immigrants, many from present-day Czech lands, made up a large share of the cigar trade in American cities, and families often rolled and bunched tobacco together in cramped rooms that doubled as kitchens and bedrooms. The date of about 1889 comes from an older caption card that has not been independently verified, so it is best read as a typical example of tenement piecework from that decade. Work of this kind often spread into every corner of the household, from the kitchen table to the bed frames.
