A pencil sketch on brown paper shows soldiers of General Christopher C. Augur's brigade waiting for railway cars to carry them to Upton's Hill, Virginia, which the title calls their old camp. The subject list names the 14th, 22nd, 24th and 30th New York infantry regiments and a railroad station near Alexandria, places tied to the Union army's buildup around Washington in the winter of 1862. The sheet catches uniforms, drums and a crowded platform, and its subject headings also point to the destruction and pillaging that accompanied army life in northern Virginia during the war.
