The Battle of the Plains of Abraham, fought outside Quebec on September 13, 1759, is the event this engraving commemorates, and its title pins the moment to the day of the attack. British forces under General James Wolfe climbed the cliffs west of the city and drew up on the plains above it, where a brief, decisive engagement with the French under the Marquis de Montcalm led to the surrender of Quebec. Printed in the London Magazine in June 1760, the view reached a British readership while the campaign was still fresh news, and it helped shape how the victory was pictured at home. Wolfe died in the fighting, which made the scene a lasting emblem of imperial triumph.
