Dutch Gap, a neck of land on the James River in Virginia, is where Union Gen. Benjamin F. Butler ordered a canal dug in 1864 to bypass a sharp bend of the river. The drawing shows the project at work, with soldiers and wagons crowding the cut as men labored to move earth. Butler hoped the channel would let Union gunboats slip past Confederate batteries and approach Richmond and Petersburg without running that gauntlet. The work was slow and was later abandoned in favor of other operations, but the drawing records the scale of the effort.
