Stonewall Jackson, the Confederate general, is the subject here, shown in the uniform of the Confederate States Army. Jackson earned his nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, when Confederate commander Barnard Bee reportedly pointed to him as a rock of resistance. He was known for his rapid marches and surprise attacks during the Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1862, and he remained one of the most admired commanders in the South until his death in May 1863 after being wounded by friendly fire at Chancellorsville. Portraits like this one were widely sold and traded during and after the war, making them useful records of how Southern leaders were presented to the public.
