Calvin Coolidge is shown taking the oath of office, an event the subject headings date to 1923. He had become president in August of that year after Warren G. Harding died, and he was sworn in by his father, a notary public, at the family home in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, in the middle of the night. That quiet, rural setting fit Coolidge's reputation for plainness. This color halftone carries a Curtis Publishing Company copyright, and such full-color reproductions of public figures were popular in the 1920s.
