This wood engraving shows John Tyler learning that William Henry Harrison had died, news that made Tyler the first vice president to succeed to the presidency after a president's death. Harrison had taken office only a month earlier, on March 4, 1841, and died of pneumonia a few weeks into his term. The scene was drawn and engraved in 1888, long after the event, as a book illustration in the style of late nineteenth-century American history volumes that revisited the early presidents. Its lasting interest lies in the constitutional question it raised: Tyler's insistence on taking the full office, not merely acting in it, set a precedent that was later written into the Twenty-Fifth Amendment.
