This sheet music cover, issued in Baltimore in 1840 by the publisher Samuel Carusi, uses a lithograph to promote a march and quick step titled for William Henry Harrison's log cabin. During the 1840 presidential campaign, Whig supporters presented Harrison, a former army general and frontier figure, as a plain man of humble log cabins and hard cider, in pointed contrast to the incumbent Martin Van Buren. Campaign songs like this one carried those images into parlors and taverns, turning a political message into something people could play and sing. The cover itself is worth a look for how it mixes a cabin scene with the music's printed title.
