A caricature from the early months of the Mexican-American War, this lithograph shows Mexican leaders making off from Matamoros, the Rio Grande city that became a focus of the fighting in 1846, with their valuables in tow. Its publisher, the New York firm F. & S. Palmer, issued many inexpensive comic and topical prints for a broad public, and the record notes that Frances Palmer probably drew it. Such images framed the war in mocking terms, portraying the Mexican government as cowardly and self-serving, so the print is best read as political propaganda as much as a view of events on the ground.
