Live oaks hung with Spanish moss drew many northern travelers to Florida after the Civil War, and this stereograph captures the gray-green canopy that struck so many of them. Spanish moss is not really a moss but a flowering plant in the pineapple family, and it hangs from branches without harming the tree. Albumen prints mounted on cards like this one were made for parlor stereoscopes, which merged two slightly different views into a single image with apparent depth. The record dates the card only as "187-," but its catalog classification places it in the 1870s, when such views were at the height of their popularity.
