Ellis Island, the federal immigration station in New York Harbor, is the setting here, and the record places this scene somewhere between 1907 and 1917, the busiest stretch of its years of operation. Bain News Service, a press photography agency in New York, made the picture, and its negative is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Arrivals passed through the station's registry rooms, where inspectors checked health and paperwork before anyone could enter the country. Photographs like this one are a useful record of that crowded process, and they show the scale of immigration in the early twentieth century.
