A drawing dated April 12, 1861, shows Black men mounting cannon in the earthworks on Morris Island, at the southern edge of Charleston harbor. The batteries there, including the one at Cummings Point, took part in the Confederate bombardment of the federal garrison at Fort Sumter that day, which opened the Civil War. Enslaved and free Black laborers were widely pressed into building and working Confederate fortifications around Charleston in 1861, and the title's wording reflects that reality. The sketch is done in pencil and Chinese white and black ink wash on green paper, which suggests a quick study made near the works rather than a finished print.
