The view shows the fort at the western end of Sullivan's Island, at the mouth of Charleston harbor, with Sir Peter Parker's British fleet positioned for the attack of June 28, 1776. The engraver's title notes that the bombardment lasted nine hours and forty minutes. The fort's walls were built of palmetto logs packed with sand, which absorbed much of the British fire, and the defenders under William Moultrie held their position, a result that encouraged the American cause early in the war. William Faden published the plate in London in August 1776, only weeks after the battle. Later restrikes, issued in a New York atlas of Revolutionary battles, reused the same plate.
