Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-born steel magnate and philanthropist, stands among Tuskegee Institute's faculty in this 1906 group portrait, alongside Booker T. Washington, Margaret James Murray Washington, and Robert C. Ogden, a New York merchant who was a longtime supporter of the school. Frances Benjamin Johnston, who signed and dated the print, made many portraits and views of Tuskegee's campus and people around this time. The photograph records a visit by donors and educators to a school that Washington had built into a leading center of industrial and teacher training for Black students in the South.
