Portland's own illustrated magazine, *The West Shore*, issued this tinted lithograph as a supplement, presenting the city to readers as the metropolis of the Pacific Northwest. The record gives the 1888 population, with suburbs, as 60,000, a figure that reflects the rapid growth of the city's river port and rail connections in the 1880s. The print was registered for copyright in 1888 under the name C.L. Smith, and it shows how promoters of the period used large-format views to attract settlers, investors and businesses to the region.
