Edward Williams Clay signed this 1846 lithograph, published in New York by James Baillie, with his initials, and its title refers directly to the Oregon question. That dispute over the Pacific Northwest, which both the United States and Britain claimed, was pressing toward a crisis that spring, and the treaty settling the boundary at the 49th parallel came later that year. Clay used the fictitious Gen. Bunkum, a stock figure of American political satire, and the print's many subjects, including Prince Albert, Louis Philippe, Nicholas I, Ireland, Canada, Cuba and California, show how the cartoon tied Oregon to wider rivalries among the great powers.
