Its title plays on "Teufelhunden," or "devil dogs," the nickname German troops reportedly gave U.S. Marines after their fierce fighting at Belleau Wood in June 1918. The cartoon casts the Marines as bulldogs and the Germans as dachshunds, a common wartime pairing that set American toughness against a smaller opponent. It appeared in August 1918, as the Second Battle of the Marne, which ran from mid-July into early August, turned against the German offensive. Editorial cartoons like this one helped Americans follow the war and supported recruiting drives that filled the Marine Corps' ranks.
