The title, *Defense of the California Bank*, points to the gold rush. News of the strikes reached the East in late 1848, and President James K. Polk confirmed the discoveries to Congress that December. New York publishers Henry Serrell and S. Lee Perkins issued this lithograph in 1849, and its subjects include Queen Isabella II of Spain, Napoleon III, Britain, and Russia alongside American army and navy forces. The print reflects a common anxiety of the day: that European powers would seek to take advantage of California's riches, and that the nation had to defend them.
