Mother Bank" was the popular nickname for the Second Bank of the United States, and this cartoon imagines its collapse during the bitter 1833 fight over Andrew Jackson's campaign against it, when he moved federal deposits out of the bank. The print names Nicholas Biddle, the bank's president, along with Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and the editors M. M. Noah and J. Watson Webb. The caption credits the drawing to "Zek. Downing," nephew of Jack Downing, a homespun satirical character of the period. This copy is reversed from an original by Edward Williams Clay, published in New York.
