The bloomer costume, loose trousers worn beneath a short skirt, takes its name from Amelia Bloomer, who promoted the style in her temperance and women's rights newspaper, *The Lily*, in the late 1840s. Nathaniel Currier's 1851 lithograph turns the garment into a comic spectacle, the kind of cheap, widely sold print that reached a broad public. Such prints often used the costume to mock women who wanted more freedom of movement and dress, so the image says as much about public attitudes as about fashion. Viewers today can read it as a record of how quickly a reform idea became a target for ridicule.
